Lee Blakeley's elegant staging could scarcely be bettered. As well as neatly judging the libretto's balance between pantomime farce and moral allegory, it has a clarity that matches the economy of the music.

..It has certainly been worth the wait. Sian Edwards, conducting, and Lee Blakeley, directing, create a thrilling evening.
Blakeley and his designer, Jean-Marc Puissant, listen acutely to Weir's music and respond with deft brush-strokes of image and movement.

Blakeley's knockabout staging of the Chinese opera is deftly hilarious

Lee Blakeley's pacey production, with intricate and witty designs by Jean-Marc Puissant, and the strong cast, many of whom double up, present highly individual characterisations. The opera-within-an-opera is a comic tour-de-force, but the show also makes you think - about truth and fiction, fate, and both ancient and modern China.
